    History and Hidden Gems

Growing up in the area I thought I had been to, and seen everything worth seeing and doing in the area … boy was I wrong. There is so much I have never seen or was too young to appreciate when I did but there places I never knew existed. Place that didn’t exists or didn’t make it on my radar for whatever reason. I guess what happens after a while of living in the same city, is you get used to your ‘little bubble’ and forget there is so much more than that to experience.

East Alabama Motor Speedway – the ‘Daytona of Dirt’

Race fans are well aware that Phenix City is home to one of the best dirt tracks in
country – East Alabama Motor Speedway (EAMS). The track has even been called
the “Daytona of Dirt.” However, for many
in our region EAMS is still somewhat of a hidden gem. Located on Highway 80
about 10 miles west of downtown Phenix City is fun for everyone. When the
engines roar and green flag drops, whether this is the 100th race
you’ve seen or the first you are in for a night of excitement and adrenaline
    that is hard to match.

    This
weekend EAMS will host the Alabama Shootout, part of the Lucas Oil Late Model
Dirt Series. This is only their second ever appearance in our area and one not
to be missed. The main event takes place on April 1st with gates opening at 4pm, drivers giving
autographs at 5:30pm and the competition will start at 7pm with about 40
drivers competing in qualifying heats with about 24 in the main event. General
admission tickets for this event are $35 with kids 12 and under free.

The race features the nation’s top dirt track drivers. You don’t want to miss your
chance to see the best of the best reach up to 120 mph for 60-laps on this 3/8
of a mile high banked red clay oval track. These drivers are competing for
prize money but also to gain points toward a national championship. The race at
EAMS will have a $60,000 purse with $12,000 going to the winner.

These Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt racecars are on the cutting edge of technology in
construction and are powered by 800 horsepower V-8 engines based on the Chevy,
Ford and Mopar power plants. Nothing is ‘stock’ about these $70,000 machines
that provide dirt slinging, sideways, door-to-door racing action lap after lap.
The in your face excitement of a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event is
    second to none in motorsports.

If you can’t make it this weekend there are plenty of other opportunities to get in
on the heart pounding action. Typically EAMS host about 30 events a year from
stock car racing to monster truck shows, demolition derbies and national
    touring series events.

This is the 45th year for racing at EAMS and they have made some major improvements.
EAMS seats about 6,000 including about 200 new stadium style seats to improve
the comfort for spectators, indoor box seats are available and concrete bleacher/grandstand
style seating (you may want to bring a cushion or blanket if you plan to sit here).

The popularity of dirt track racing is growing so make plans
to visit EAMS and see what all the buzz is about. Visit www.EAMSDirt.com for the full schedule of
events and like their Facebook page www.facebook.com/eamsdirt/
to get the latest updates and information.

    See you at the track!
